This Work Package will be responsible for the oversight of the technical and scientific aspects of the Design Study. It will therefore produce an initial list of parameters for the whole facility and define them at an early stage in order to guide all Work Packages (proton energy, pulse frequency and duration, achievable proton power, far detector size, civil construction limitations, safety aspects, etc.).
It will monitor milestones, make sure that deliverables be produced on time, check the scientific relevance of all reports, and supervise the implementation of the recommendations made by the International Advisory Panel (IAP). Through its work with the Coordinators of the other 5 Work Packages and a range of experts, it will use the whole information generated to produce a Conceptual Design Report. In this CDR, it will particularly be responsible for the evaluation of the global costing of the facility and for the production of a prioritised list of tasks to be considered in the construction phase and to be discussed by all stakeholders.
WP1 will work with a Dissemination and Exploitation Board (DEB) to coordinate the protection, use and dissemination of the knowledge generated by the Design Study. In close collaboration with DEB and the Executive Committee, it will take care of the Innovation Management insofar as it will consider both external and internal opportunities concerning any Work Packages to introduce new ideas to the project and seek support for their promotion.
It will have in charge the coordination of the contractual, financial and administrative aspects of the project. In this respect, it will carry out or coordinate the activities related to all strategic objectives such as cost evaluation, safety considerations, communication activities, identification of organisational aspects for the construction project, and the building up of contacts with national, European and international administrations, decision-makers and funding agencies. WP1 will also act strategically to promote the Design Study and its continuation into the construction project.
